Some of the most recognized and successful businesses were created in a garage/barn just like 734 Strength. Now, I am not trying to compare 734 Strength to Amazon and their monetary success, but I will compare our mission and core values. I also know why businesses that started similar to mine are successful. And there are a couple simple reasons why….they are passionate about what they do and they care about helping people in one way or another. Those two reasons hold true for me and 734 Strength.
When people ask me how or where 734 Strength started it brings a smile to my face… I simply tell them in a barn in 2012. I go on to tell them it is a 600 square foot pole barn that is located at my sister and brother in laws house just south of Ypsilanti. That we didn’t have a bathroom besides the corn field or next to the gas tank. Also, that for over a year we didn’t have any heat besides a floor heater and that many days the barbells were covered in frost (try to hook grip a frozen bar in January in Michigan). We frequently got visitors in the form of frogs, mice and bugs. Our main lifting area (when it was nice outside) was a very uneven blacktop driveway. I could continue to go on about all the things we didn’t have and how we had to always share equipement at the barn, but instead I would rather tell you how that beginning shaped 734 Strength to what it is today.
734 Strength is still the same special place today as it was 6 years ago when it all began, we are just in a larger facility with more members now. We started with basically nothing. Hell, most of the time we had to share barbells, kettlebells, squat racks and rowers (almost all second hand equipment too). We built a strong foundation of teamwork and camaraderie due to the “things” we didn’t have. But I wouldn’t trade what we gained in values for all the best equipment rogue had to offer.
I honestly just wanted to help people and that same simple concept is true today. I wanted to create a space where people felt welcome, became more fit, had fun, and created new relationships. I never imagined the impact that barn would have on so many people over the next 6 years. I have got to witness lifelong friendships formed, I have been able to witness members vowing their life and love to one another through marriage. But I would tell you the most rewarding moments I have got to witness have been the moments of personal triumph during difficult workouts. Those triumphs have given so many people more confidence in life and more confidence and strength during hard times in their life. I like to think that all the sweat and hard work that was laid down into the equipement and the mats from the barn has given all the new members along the way the same strength. Almost like an old cast iron skillet that holds onto the flavors of all the years previous. We have held onto the roots we planted 6 years ago and I can guarantee you that will never change. It is who we are.
I can not express how much I appreciate the people that were there at the barn in a blog. You guys are the reason why 734 Strength is still going strong today. You are the reason why we are still helping people change their lives.
