Even if you have been in shape in the past, attempting to work your way back into shape can be very mentally taxing and overwhelming. Even though its a very simple thing to accomplish. It’s simple but not easy. What I mean by that is the it’s simple to just start moving more or to join a gym. There are gyms/fitness centers everywhere! But again it’s not easy. There are many factors that make getting into shape not an easy task. So with this blog I want to talk about the mental portion and how to start being more positive towards fitness and working out.
Generally If you have a bad experience or failed at something in your life you will always have ill feelings towards that experience. And exercise or physical activity is right up there with an activity that most of us have either hated or failed at during a time in our life. So how do we flip our attitude and become more positive towards fitness/working out?
I believe that most people exercise as a form of punishment or something they HAVE to do….”I ate this so now I have to exercise”. That type of mindset will set you up to have a bad attitude towards working out. An easy way to change that mindset is to say “I exercise four times per week so I can have this piece of cheesecake”. Also, most people do not enjoy doing the things “they have to”. I mean how much more enjoyable would folding laundry be if it was something you chose to do rather than you HAVE to do? But if you love your body and realize that its a gift you just may start to treat it better because you want to not because you have to. This mindset will help set you up to have a more positive outlook on working out.
I hear a lot of people tell me that they don’t like exercise. But thats false! It’s false because they have grouped all forms of exercise into one group and thats not fair. I challenge you to try all that fitness has to offer. Biking, walking, kayaking, yoga, boxing, pilates, CrossFit, weightlifting, running, mountain climbing and the list goes on. You just have to find the one thats right for you. I also know for a fact that exercise increases serotonin levels in the brain which improves your mood. And you will feel this right away. Once you feel that build off of that feeling. It will make you smile and also make you want to do it more often because our body craves high levels of serotonin.
So now that I have given you a long list of the the different types of exercise and how it can help change your mindset and improve your attitude towards fitness start today! Go buy some new fitness gear (we all love new gear) and use exercise as a way to celebrate your body your mind and the ability to move. Celebrate small victories and set goals. We only get one body and one shot at life. But whatever activity you do make sure you are having FUN!!!
