CrossFit & Weight Loss
Have you ever seen a person on a piece of cardio equipment with a full sweatsuit on with one of those bright silver jackets that kind of looks like tin foil? Ya me too. There are a couple things very wrong with this method of losing weight. Number one, it is very unsafe and number two long slow duration cardio isn’t the most effective way to lose weight or drop fat. I don’t want you to keep waisting your valuable time.
The old school way of thought is that “cardio” is the most effective way of losing weight in terms of exercise. What If I told you that is false? Now before I get into what’s better and why that method isn’t the best first let me say I am in no ways bashing the person who got off of the couch and started walking, jogging, biking or step milling. I salute those people for trying to make a change for their health and wellness. And though cardio is better than doing nothing at all…there is a much more effective way to speed up the loss of fat and the loss of unwanted weight.
At 734 Strength we use the CrossFit methodology. We perform functional movements (full body movements) at high intensity (more work less time) and we constantly vary our workouts. Science has proven that for us to increase the metabolism (burning) of fat we have to train at a higher intensity than what we can during a 45 minute jog. This basically means that we have to increase the heart rate (at or above 85% of your max heart rate), increase respiration and take minimal breaks so that we are pushing our bodies into a zone that doesn’t allow for as much oxygen. Here is why, human fat cells store triglyceride, which is a type of fat in the blood. This fat is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. These atoms are released through oxidation and when that happens, fat is burned off. So we basically breath out our fat cells. Pretty amazing huh?
Now I know that probably sounds barbaric right? We need oxygen to live, yes I understand that but we also need to burn oxygen during exercise to lose weight. Sooooo if we can exercise in a state of less oxygen we can then burn fat at a sooner and faster rate.
When we train with more intensity than what we are used to we will find the the magic pill. Remember that intensity is relative. For someone who just began jogging at home asking them to increase their speed would be increasing the intensity. So don’t be scared of intimidated by the work “intensity”. Everyone we training has their own version of intensity. And the more you train and become fitter we can increase the intensity once you’re ready.
Along with the above proven facts, at 734 Strength we also perform strength training. Lean muscle plays an important role in metabolism/fat burning. For every pound of muscle that you have in your body it will burn 50 calories per day. More muscle means higher fat burning. And NO! a pound of muscle doesn’t weigh more than a pound of fat. If someone ever tells you that you need to smack them. Well maybe not smack but stop talking to them immediately, because last time I checked a pound is a pound. The real difference in appearance comes from a difference in density, which is a topic for a later date. As a result of a higher metabolism you will also have an increased level of energy and stamina.
